Hypnosis For Pain Management

Recently a hypnotist received a call from the wife of a friend he had not seen for several years.  His friend had had surgery for cancer of the kidney.  The wife asked the hypnotist if he would see the husband and try to relieve the intense pain his friend was suffering.  The hypnotist requested authority from his friends’ doctor to enter into the case.  He was advised that the situation was terminal, and that any help with pain would be more than welcome.

The hypnotist made a tape dealing with relaxation, rest, and pain reduction for his friend.  He found his friend was in bed, his face contorted with agony, with a tube in the arm connected to a button which released morphine on demand.  The morphine now provided minimal relief.

THE POWER OF THE MIND

After discussing hypnosis and the powers of the mind, an induction was begun.  His friend responded very well.  He was programmed for alleviation of pain, control of emotions, ability to take nourishment and response to treatment.  He was given a special cue to use for pain relief when discomfort became particularly intense.  He was given the tape and advised it paralleled the hypnotic session and would provide similar relief when used. After listening to the tape, he slept. When he awoke he  commented that he had not rested so well in months.

In six weeks the patient died.  At the funeral the wife told the hypnotist the final six weeks had been bearable for both the patient and the family.  When he would play the tape he would move from deep pain to total relaxation within thirty seconds. 

A hypnotist will not work with physical pain without a doctor’s referral.  Negative attitudes, and fears, and swallowed emotions must be dealt with.  The capability of hypnosis to modify trends of thought is important.  In dealing with pain situations, the use of self-hypnosis techniques can be highly beneficial, reinforcing the programming that has been done in the case.
